The central charge c of the Virasoro algebra is calculated to two loops for nonlinear σ models in two dimensions with internal spaces which are general Riemannian manifolds M with torsion; at three loops qualitative results are shown to be in agreement with known results for special manifolds. Unless the scalar curvature R(φi0) (coming from the symmetric portion of the connection) is a constant function of its coordinates (φi0), the central charge c is not a numerical constant. This prevents one from using the σ models discussed here (for R not constant)-those with only kinetic and torsion terms-to construct string models.
