We generalize on the planetary scale some results by Mundt, Aubert and Kas'yanenko for the European area. We prove that the secular variation (SV) shows a scatter (with respect to some smooth trend) which correlates with a suitable surface (specifically, with its radial distance from the Earth's centre at each geomagnetic observatory), obtained by interpolating the ocean floors and by extrapolating them inside the continental areas. Such a surface has been selected from 30 different ones (including the geoid) by a statistical analysis of 20 160 possible plots. A very tentative interpretation can be proposed in terms of a possible role of long-period telluric currents flowing in the asthenosphere, mostly zonally and in an equatorial belt. This conclusion, however, could find additional confirmation by means of some suitable further investigations and harder thinking, for which a few suggestions are proposed here. Furthermore, an interesting by-product is the evidence of an apparent and clear periodicity of ~ 11/3 years in the geomagnetic yearly values, which also needs to be discussed further.
