The problem of a compact object accreting from an inhomogeneous medium has been studied, using a three-dimensional numerical scheme. When pressure effects are neglected, it has been shown that the mass accretion rate is given by the Bondi-Hoyle value. Not more than a few per cent of the angular momentum deposited into the accretion cylinder are accreted by the compact object. Some possible consequences for the case of neutron stars and white dwarfs accreting from a stellar wind are discussed.
