Observed and high accuracy inferred daily interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) polarities from 1947-80 were analyzed to confirm movements of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) with respect to the solar equator. Variable placement of the HCS in relation to the solar activity phases and equator were invoked to explain statistically detected away-toward differences of the IMF mean sector widths (MSW) during solar minima. The data were overall consistent with the HCS being symmetrical with respect to the solar equator, vertical to it and extending to high heliolatitudes. The data on MSW during the last minimum in 1975-77 lead to a prediction that the solar minima of 1976-98 will be accompanied by northward depression of the HCS in the solar southern hemisphere and a symmetrical formation in the northern hemisphere.
