The recurrent 2-sector pattern of the interplanetary magnetic field observed by Helios 1 in the second half of 1975 can be represented in terms of a current sheet corotating with the sun and tilted at an angle greater than or equal to 9-10 deg with respect to the solar equator. Assuming that the strength of the interaction between the interplanetary magnetic field and the earth's magnetosphere is only determined by the amount of the southward fields which are created in the magnetospheric coordinate system, the geomagnetic consequences which should be expected for the model geometry were estimated. The power spectra of the geomagnetic activity indices Ap and aa in the period of interest are evaluated and, in agreement with the model predictions, clear evidence is found only for peaks of power with periods close to T(s) and T(s)/2, T(s) being the period of the solar rotation as seen from earth.
