The infrared thermal radiation of the nucleus of Halley's comet at 0.8 AU from the Sun was measured by the imaging channel of the IKS-VEGA-1 spectrophotometer in wavelengths bands 7 to 10 and 9 to 14 micron. Near the closest approach, the color temperature of the nucleus is between 370 and 450 K. A maximum brightness surface temperature between 350 and 400 K is deduced around the subsolar direction, from the value of the measured fluxes. The surface temperature of the nucleus is shown to be subject to high gradients relative to the Sun direction. These observations suggest that a large part of Halley's nucleus is covered by a refractory, dark, and inactive crust.
