Twenty-one fast forward shock events observed between 0.29 and 0.98 AU over the December 1974-December 1980 period, for which the angle between the upstream magnetic field and the shock-normal direction is less than 20 deg, are investigated to ascertain those general conditions under which these shocks may be designated 'parallel' in the strict sense stipulated by MHD theory. A very general adaptive optimization and acceptance scheme is developed in order to iterate the Helios spaceprobe data to the ideal Rankine-Hugoniot conditions for both oblique and parallel shocks. Between 2 and 17 parallel shocks are found, depending on the level of sophistication of this scheme. Examples are given of both 'corotating' and 'transient' parallel shocks. Quasi-parallel shocks with angles smaller than 20 deg occur more frequently closer to the sun.
