Using N2 data obtained by the ESRO 4 gas analyzer, the local time dependence of upper atmospheric storm effects (geomagnetic activity effect) at middle latitudes is investigated. It is found that the inferred exospheric temperature increase is significantly larger in the morning than in the afternoon/evening local time sector. As to the origin of this effect, it is suggested that the expansion of the polar atmospheric disturbance toward middle latitudes is essentially restricted to the midnight/early morning hours.
