The theory of satellite orbits about an oblate planet is studied by smeans of a new set of canonical variables. The Hamiltonian function is sseparated into two parts, one of which is neglected. The neglected part sis periodic with mean value equal to zero, and it vanishes when the sinclination is zero. Thus the solution obtained by neglecting this part sof the Hamiltonian is exact for equatorial orbits; for inclined orbits sthe secular motion of the node and perigee are obtained correctly to the ssecond order in the oblateness parameter.
