Interpretation of the profile and intensity of the Hα emission in the spectrum of the type II supernova SN 1979c on 72 days after the light maximum results in two independent estimates of the lower limit of the mass of the envelope (M > 0.6 M_sun;). An analysis of the light curve on the basis of an approximate theory gives the value of the envelope mass of SN 1979c M ≈ 1 M_sun;, which is consistent with the lower limit obtained from Hα.
