During the summers of 2001 and 2002, we used the EISCAT VHF radar at 69°N to study Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes (PMSE). The observations include high-resolution measurements of vertical motions in the upper mesosphere. The strong radar echoes of PMSE create an ideal tracer for monitoring small-scale upward and downward movements within the PMSE layer between 82 and 92 km. The new D-LAYER-V experiment, designed specifically for mesospheric studies at EISCAT, provides extremely accurate measurements of the vertical velocity with a resolution of better than 0.1 ms-1 at 5 second integration. The importance of making such accurate observations of mesospheric dynamics will be illustrated using examples of the many and varied gravity wave periods observed. The relationship between the vertical motion, the strength of PMSE, and the ionisation in the background D-region will also be discussed.
