Scientific paper

The paper calculates electric fields and currents in the high-latitude ionosphere in the presence of a spread inner boundary of the plasma sheet, having an arbitrary thickness. It is shown that the spread of this inner boundary leads to the twisting of the system of zone II field-aligned currents on the inner boundary. This makes it possible to explain the observed distribution of electric fields and field-aligned currents in the region of the Harang discontinuity.
