Accretion processes in magnetic cataclysmic variables are reviewed. The evolutionary status of the synchronous and nonsynchronous systems is discussed, as are the system geometries and their hard and soft X-ray emission. It is argued that accretion disks may not form in nonsynchronous (intermediate polar) systems with orbital periods or = 5 hr.
