We consider a sample of 49 BL Lac objects from an ongoing spectroscopic program at the ESO VLT (B. Sbarufatti at this conference). We fit the continuum by a power law after correction for the host galaxy contribution and we report the spectral index distribution, distinguishing between HBL and LBL. For 30 BLLs we consider also the optical-X-ray spectral index distribution.
