Sub-millimeter mapping of star-forming regions has revealed dense condensations of gaseous clumps with masses in the typical range of stars. The distribution of clump masses is similar to the stellar initial mass function; however, the clumps appear to be stable against collapse. The clumps are clustered within the cores of a molecular cloud rather than randomly placed. The clumps are further restricted to those locations within the molecular cloud where the column density is highest (Av > 4). Finally, the typical sub-millimeter clump reveals little or no emission from isotopes of CO, likely indicating that the combination of high density and low temperatures within the clumps provides an environment in which these molecules freeze-out onto dust grain surfaces.
