He-rich thermonuclear bursts are at present unexamined by high-sensitivity, high-spectral resolution observations. Theoretical simulations predict conditions at the peak of such bursts conducive to producing rich emission line and photoionisation edge spectra from a variety of heavy elements. We propose observations of 4U 1728-34, the only source which produces frequent He-rich bursts, in order to test for such features and also to undertake deep searches for persistent spectral features and orbital intensity modulations.
