We propose the first X-ray study of an unbiased sample of galaxy groups at intermediate redshifts. The proposed observations will allow us to determine the fraction of groups at these redshifts which contain a hot intragroup medium. This in turn provides a measurement of the dynamical state of each group. Combined with on-going studies of nearby group samples, the XMM-Newton observations will allow us investigate how the X-ray properties of groups have changed in time.
