PG 1404+226 is an unusually soft, highly variable narrow-line Seyfert 1 type AGN. The variability is in both overall flux and spectral shape. Previous observations with XMM-Newton, ASCA and Chandra have found unusual absorption features, which vary on similar timescales to the overall spectrum. A longer XMM-Newton observation of 50 ks will allow further investigation of these features and provide the necessary data quality to distinguish between the two models for the emission proposed in our previous investigation of the source.
