The supernova remnant CTA 1 that falls within the error box of the EGRET source 3EG J0010+7309 contains one of the best X-ray candidates for a radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar. Previous XMM and Chandra observations of CTA 1 revealed a faint point source embedded within a pulsar wind nebula, and a prominent jet, but were not sensitive enough to detect pulsations. Since the deepest possible radio searches have failed, this proposal for a longer XMM observation represents the only hope for discovering the period of the CTA 1 pulsar. Its spin parameters are necessary to determine its cooling age and rotational energetics, as well as to establish its identification with the gamma-ray source, which will soon be possible in combination with timing data from GLAST.
