We propose to use the XMM-Newton EPIC instrument to map the distribution of hot plasma in the inner region of the Milky Way using the proven method of shadowing observations. By using a large sample of molecular clouds at varying distances and sky positions, the three-dimensional distribution of plasma responsible for the observed 3/4 keV diffuse background in the Galactic plane can be determined. This will provide checks on the evolution of the interstellar medium and constraints on the energy balance and chemical evolution of our Galaxy.
