The operating principle and design status of the Very Large Telescope being developed for installation at ESO in 1995-1998 are reviewed and illustrated with drawings, diagrams, and photographs. The design calls for a linear array of four unenclosed 15-tonne 8-m-diameter glass-ceramic or metallic reflectors with 150-250 active-optics controllers each; combined operation of two, three, or four reflectors gives effective diameters 11.3, 13.9, and 16.0 m, respectively, and the reflectors can be moved along a 100-m track for interferometric observations.
