Theories are considered in which a symmetry exists when formulated in some special backgrounds. Among these, the only ones of real cosmological interest are some special k = 0 Robertson-Walker metrics. This symmetry exists in some effective theories originating from Kaluza-Klein models or superstring theories. A cosmological constant term destroys this symmetry. The possible role of this symmetry in the resolution of cosmological problems is discussed.
