A theoretical analysis is made of the motion in the plasmasphere of a small-scale Alfven-wave packet generated by a localized source of artificial or natural origin in the midlatitude ionosphere. Equations of packet motion averaged over the period of oscillations between conjugate ionospheres are obtained; these equations are sufficiently simple and convenient for investigating packet displacement across the magnetic shells. Numerical calculations of the packet trajectories are used to interpret results of the MASSA experiments carried out on the Aureol satellite and involving the active excitation of the ionosphere.
