The best empirical model for the thermosphere is at present based on incoherent backscatter measurements, including assessments of the exospheric temperature made with high accuracy (+ or - 10 to 20 K) and time resolution (10 to 30 min) at widely separated latitudes. However, recent data suggests that the relationship between magnetic activity and thermospheric temperature is not always well represented in the empirical model. It has also been found that more heat is deposited in the summer auroral zone than in the winter zone. Seasonal variations in thermospheric composition may be related to the transport of atomic oxygen from the summer to the winter hemisphere.
