A dimensional analysis is conducted to determine the radii of planetary fluid cores and thus the presence of intrinsic magnetic fields generated by the dynamo effect, based on observed magnetic field intensities. The magnetic field is assumed to depend on the density, radius, magnetic diffusivity and angular velocity of the core and the critical Reynolds number is assumed to be the same for each planet. Using values of 0.2 gamma and 5 gamma for the lunar and Martian magnetic fields respectively, it is shown that these bodies have essentially no fluid cores. Magnetic fields of 30 gamma for Venus and 160 gamma for Mercury lead to core radii of 820 km and 1330 km respectively and Jupiter and Saturn are calculated to have cores of 0.7 and 0.35 times their radii, if a dynamo is operating.
