An analysis is given of the parametric excitation of an Alfven and a magnetosonic wave by a magnetosonic pump wave which propagates obliquely to the magnetic field, and the nonlinear system of three waves in a uniform, unbounded, ideally conducting compressible plasma is studied. It is shown that growing parametric instabilities are obtained when wavenumbers and frequencies satisfy appropriate limits, where the growth rates and frequencies of the excited waves and threshold pump intensities are functions of the frequencies and wavenumbers of three waves. The theoretical model presented ignores the resistivity of plasma. It is concluded that the parametric instability of Pc3 range hydromagnetic waves is a more satisfactory theory than that of linear resonance.
