Chatanika radar measurements are combined with magnetometer data from the Triad satellite to relate the electrodynamic properties of the ionosphere to field-aligned currents. In all cases the downward current region coincides with an E region electron density that increases to the north, and the equator boundary of the current sheet is associated with maximum E region densities of about 100,000 el/cu cm. The ionospheric current is negligible equatorward of the downward current region. Examples of the noted behavior are found at all local times in the evening sector, and because these results differ substantially from those of Klumper (1979), it is suggested that the pattern applies to winter conditions only.
