A numerical solution of the equations of motion using ionospheric models and a neutral-atmosphere model are used to construct the global general circulation pattern at ionospheric heights. It is shown that the general circulation pattern in the ionosphere must contain large-scale vortex formations and zones of wind convergence and divergence, leading to the generation of upwelling and downwelling air streams. These features of the general circulation also lead to the transport and redistribution of ionospheric plasma both in the vertical and horizontal directions.
