Basu (1981) has pointed out that emission-line and absorption-line redshifts are correlated. He concludes that quasar absorption lines originate in matter intrinsic to the QSOs (rather than in intervening galaxies). The considered investigation has the objective to show that highly significant correlations are also expected between the absorption and emission-line redshifts under the intervening galaxy hypothesis. It is found that a correlation between the emission- and absorption-line redshifts is no evidence at all that all quasar absorption-line systems are 'intrinsic', and that the opposite hypothesis (intervening galaxies) explains the correlation equally well.
