Since Weber first reported the apparent detection of gravitational radiation there has been considerable discussion of how gravitational detectors work. In this paper we present an alternative approach to the problem which emphasizes the important point that the design and calibration of such detectors can be done without reference to a theoretical understanding of the complicated systems involved. We also show how, with simple assumptions, one can relate our treatment to previous work.
