The results of experimental investigations of gapless and narrow-gap semimagnetic semiconductors are reviewed. Consideration is given to the main features of gapless and narrow-band SMS containing atoms of transition elements with unfilled d-shells. The physical characteristics of the three main SMS materials mercury chalcogenide, manganese, and europium, are described, with emphasis given to the physical mechanisms for the formation of a spin-glass phase when the concentration of a transition element is low; the manifestation of thermal oscillations at low temperature; and the effect of magnetic excitations on the galvanomagnetic and magnetooptical properties of SMS materials when the concentration of the transition element is greater than 10-15 percent.
