A summary is presented of the missions and data yield from probes sent to Mars and the configurations which possible future missions will be given. Viking spacecraft have provided soil chemical sample data and meteorological data, along with thermal and photographic maps of the surface. It is now known that running water once existed on the Martian landscape before extensive cooling froze the CO2 and the water vapor from the atmosphere. Mars Observer and Mars Aeronomy Orbiter spacecraft are now under development for near-term launches. The spacecraft will map the surface and atmosphere, provide data for climatological and geochemical studies, and sample the upper Martian atmosphere and magnetosphere. A dual orbiter program featuring the Observer and the proposed ESA Kepler satellite will permit radio surveys of the Mars atmosphere temperature and ion density profiles. Data will also be gathered on the Mars gravity field. It is possible that jointly developed NASA-ESA robots will follow the dual orbiters and explore the Mars surface.
