The results of the first detailed analysis of data from the first 37
days of Magellan's initial 243-day mapping cycle of the Venusian surface
are discussed. The role of volcanism in the development of the planet's
surface is addressed. The interaction between the mantle and the
lithosphere and its influence on Venusian evolution is examined.
