Consideration is given to the possibility of the statistical acceleration of solar wind thermal ions to energies of 10 keV or more in the vicinity of corotating high-speed solar wind streams near 1 AU. It is shown that: (1) acceleration can occur only in the compressed flat stream plasma within the interaction region between the stream interface and the trailing edge; and (2) that solar wind ion acceleration may account for the energetic ion enhancements observed by Richardson and Zwickl (1984) at 1 AU. It is suggested that scattering from hydromagnetic waves is the physical mechanism for the statistical acceleration, and that statistical ion acceleration in the outer heliosphere may provide a source population for corotating reverse shocks.
