A statistical analysis of all the magnetotail boundary crossings recorded between January 1974 and December 1982 by IMP 8 has been performed. The results show that the open tail boundary is to a large extent characterized by a rotational-discontinuity/plasma-mantle structure whose geometry is consistent with MHD models. Relevant parameters are estimated, including the an average size of roughly 100 deg for the open window for a horizontal orientation of the IMF and a value of 24 deg for the tilt of its asymmetry axis relative to the earth's dipole axis. A dependence of the average normal magnetic field component on the inclination of the IMF is suggested by minimum variance analyses. The strongest normals occur for a southward orientation, with an average of 0.202 (normalized to the total field magnitude); an intemediate value is found for an east-west orientation where the average is 0.182, and the smallest average normal field of 0.150 is found when the IMF has a northward orientation.
