It is shown that causality and magnetic charge conservation impose constraints on models in which the monopole problem of grand unified theories is solved by invoking a very efficacious annihilation mechanism. In particular, such models may not be able to yield a monopole density consistent with the most stringent bounds which have been claimed for the current monopole abundance.
