We investigate the limitations on possible cosmic no-hair theorems stability of the de Sitter universe in theories possessing quadratic scalar curvature contributions to the gravitational lagrangian. We find that, as in general relativity, the de Sitter solution is unstable in the presence of bulk viscous stresses which violate the strong energy condition but which obey the weak and dominant energy conditions. The possible relevance to inflationary universes is discussed.
