Scientific paper

The Pioneer Venus Orbiter measurements of the plasma and magnetic environment of the near tail of Venus show that the ionosphere becomes increasingly filamentary with increasing altitude, apparently forming cometlike tail rays that extend several thousand kilometers behind the planet. The goal of this paper is to describe the configuration and morphology of these features up to about 3000 km downstream and to estimate the planetary ion escape rate that may be associated with the dissipation and removal of the ionospheric plasma contained in them.
