The magnetic field and plasma data obtained from the Mars 2, 3, and 5 orbiters which took measurements on the orbit around Mars in 1972 and 1974 are discussed. Evidence is presented for the existence of a Martian intrinsic magnetic field. The value and orientation of the dipolar part of the Martian field, and the parameters of the Martian magnetosphere are also presented. It is shown that the dipolar part of the field is an effective obstacle to the solar wind at the most frequent parameters of the latter. In terms of the precession dynamo model, the magnetic fields of the earth and Mars are similar, indicating that the Martian magnetic field is associated with the present-day dynamo process in the Martian liquid core.
