A kinetic theory is used to model the field-aligned distribution of auroral electrons along dipole magnetic field lines. Analytical formulas are obtained for the particle flux and the energy flux as functions of V, the electric potential difference between the equatorial source region and the ionosphere where the accelerated electrons are precipitated and detected by rocket instruments. For ratios of precipitating electron energy to the parallel thermal energy of the electrons much greater than 1 and much less than 500, the energy flux is proportional to V-squared and the particle flux is proportional to V.
