The authors present first optical and near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations of two very bright unidentified IRAS point sources. They are shown to be oxygen-rich late-type stars of spectral type M8 - M9 surrounded by dense circumstellar dust shells. Using the model of radiative transfer in a spherical dust shell developed by Le Bertre et al. (1984), the authors derive some fundamental parameters of the stars and of their envelopes.
