Attention is given to the dispersion relation, marginal stability and growth rate associated with the ordinary mode in the solar wind. It is found that the ordinary mode can often become unstable in the solar wind at 1 AU provided the density ratio of halo to core electrons does not exceed 0.05. The growth rates under average conditions are typically 10 times the proton cyclotron frequency. Because of the low threshold for onset of instability (for the case where the transverse beta for the core electrons is about 1), the mode is expected to take an important part in regulating the solar wind heat flux at 1 AU.
