Canonical Quantization
Scientific paper
The nonperturbative canonical quantization of General Relativity is successful in providing a physical interpretation of spacetime at the Planck scale. During the last years substantial advances have been achieved which consolidated the mathematical framework of the theory. Spin networks have played a crucial role in the progress of the field. In this article we make a brief review of the canonical quantization method of gravity, putting a special emphasis in the use of the spin networks. Also the basis for a new formulation of quantum gravity in terms of the Vassiliev invariants are introduced. This new formulation is motivated by some fundamental problems that appear at the dynamical level of the theory.
