Although one may use Type Ia supernovae strictly as empirical standard candles, our theoretical understanding of these events is very primitive and this should be a cause for concern. Perhaps the most surprising result to the model builder is that, observationally, the light curves from these events are characterized to such high accuracy by a single parameter. Most models nowadays have at least two parameters, e.g., the mass of 56Ni synthesized and its spatial distribution in the explosion. If there are multiple independent parameters, and especially if these parameters have different evolutions with redshift, the use of Type Ia supernovae to determine cosmological distances would be in jeopardy.
