Extended inflation is a new approach to inflationary cosmology based on models closely related to Brans-Dicke theory; e.g., certain induced gravity, supergravity, and superstring models. In each of these theories, the effective gravitational constant is a function of some scalar field, ø, which varies with time during the inflationary phase transition. We show that a model consistent with astrophysical and cosmological bounds must include a non-trivial potential for ø and the Brans-Dicke parameter, b, must lie in the range 1.5
