The generator coordinate method is used to calculate fusion cross sections. The absorption is simulated by the introduction of an imaginary term in the GCM matrix elements of the microscopic hamiltonian. Our method is applied to the 12C+12C, 12C+ 16O and 16O+16O systems. We fit elastic-scattering data at 90° and fusion data up to 15 MeV. We discuss the influence of the absorption at astrophysical energies. The theoretical 12C+12C fusion cross section is shown to be significantly affected at low energies by molecular resonances.
