The unique situation afforded by the cartwheel scanning mode of the Isis 2 satellite 3914-A photometer over quiet auroras provides the basis for an assessment of earth surface albedo contributions to the observed auroral brightness as seen from above the aurora. A detailed analysis of specific satellite passes shows the validity of the procedure described by Hays and Anger (1977) for removal of the albedo contribution and restoration of the true auroral brightness profile. Reliable estimates of the integrated photon flux coming from a thin cross-sectional 'slice' through the aurora can be made even when the aurora is very near or even superimposed upon earth's limb.
