Hubble Space Telescope: Uv Spectrographs
Scientific paper
The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) has been selected as a replacement instrument for the fourth HST servicing mission in 2002. COS is a high-throughput ultraviolet spectrograph that is optimized to observe faint point sources. Two gratings are used to cover the 1150 Å to 1775 Å region at high resolution (R = 20,000 to 24,000). A third grating covers the entire 1230 Å to 2050 Å region at lower resolution (R = 2500 to 3500).
