The suggestion (Karoji and Nottale, 1976) that distant light sources appear more luminous when seen through intermediate clusters of galaxies, which act as gravitational lenses, is examined using the parameters given by King (1972) for the Coma cluster. It is shown that the maximum intensification that may be expected from gravitational lensing is much smaller than the differences reported. Measurements with an accuracy of about 0.01 mag would be necessary to detect the lensing effect, which would serve as further confirmation of the general theory of relativity and a possible means of probing the mass of a cluster of galaxies.
