We discuss the origin and nature of the highest energy cosmic rays that have been observed. Special attention is paid to the two showers of energy well above 1020 eV reported by the Fly's Eye and the AGASA collaborations. We outline the major types of models for generation of such high energy particles, discuss the propagation of ultra high energy particles in the extragalactic space and some of the problems related to the analysis and interpretation of the current and future statistics of such events.
